Trees use a substance called xylem to move water and filter out air bubbles.  This same substance has been shown to be 99.9% effective in ridding bacteria from water.  As more people are becoming aware and concerned regarding water resources, this biomimicry solution may provide a cost effective way to clean significants amount of water.  The current methodology involves passing water through membranes to trap the unwanted material, however the process is costly.  This proof of concept offers a new approach that just make clean and safe water available for a great many people.#
